ILB launched at request of Solent MRSC and Bembridge
C.G. mobile unit to the assistance of a small yacht moored to No 3 Bembridge
Channel Buoy and apparently in difficulty . The ILB rapidly located casualty and
on arrival on scene assessed the situation, all persons appeared safe and
well. The yacht had been aground and broken the tiller, which had now been jury
rigged there appeared to be no other damage. It seemed prudent to tow the
casualty in to deeper and clearer water about 1 mile South of No Mans Land Fort.
They then hoisted their sails and proceeded to Portsmouth and when ILB was
satisfied that all was in order she returned
to station. |

at 1234 to a report of a person in the water quarter a mile northeast of Sandown
pier. The ILB made best speed to the scene with an ETA of
16 minutes. Once arriving on scene the coastguard informed us the
casualty had made it to the shore and been recovered by a mobile coastguard unit
on the beach, but was in need of medical attention. One of the ILB crew was a
paramedic so we proceeded to beach the ILB. Once on the beach the casualty was
assessed and was found to be suffering from hypothermia and an ingestion of sea
water. First Aid was administer for approx 20 prior
to handing the casualty over to the ambulance crew. The ILB was relaunched
from the beach to recover the unmanned vessel from which the casualty had
fallen. Once
along side the vessel a tow was rigged and one crew member was transferred
across to man the vessel. The ILB towed the vessel back to the beach adjacent to
Yaverland Sailing club were a coastguard unit was waiting. On
Completion the ILB returned to station and was rehoused and made ready for

The Inshore Lifeboat was launched at the request of Solent MRCC to assist in the search for a windsurfer reported in difficulties in the Silver Sands area adjacent to Bembridge Harbour entrance.
Having found himself in difficulties in the windy conditions, the windsurfer had jettisoned his sail and tied it to the buoy before paddling ashore on his windsurf board.
Launching at 14:10 the ILB quickly spotted the windsurfers sail tied to a fishing buoy. Having untied the sail they took it to the shore where the windsurfer himself was now recovering.
Having reunited the windsurfer with his sail and making sure he was in a satisfactory condition the Inshore Lifeboat made its way back to the Lifeboat station at Bembridge.
Note
Later it was discovered that the windsurfer was indeed the same gentleman who on the 28th of August this year had been reported as missing. Once again off the Bembridge harbour area which resulted in a large search involving both the Bembridge Lifeboats, the Ryde Inshore Lifeboat, Coastguard Beach rescue teams and the rescue helicopter only for the gentleman to be found that time safe and well on the beach at St Helens

Following
a call for help from the 21’ Angling boat “Charlotte B”, Solent Coastguard
requested the launch of the Bembridge Inshore Lifeboat just before 23:00 The
“Charlotte B” with three people on board had run aground on the Bembridge
Ledge and the initial report was that she was taking on water.
The ILB was launched and with the
“Charlotte B” visible from the lifeboat pier the lifeboat, was quickly
alongside two minutes later. A crewman from the ILB was put onto board the
vessel and a tow line secured, the tow was then taken up and the “Charlotte
B” was pulled clear from the Ledge and out into deeper water. Once this was
achieved the tow was continued towards the lifeboat moorings whilst
through checks were made to ensure there was no water ingress. Having completed
the safety checks and with their own power unaffected by their impromptu
grounding the “Charlotte B” was released to make their own way back to her
home at Tipnor Lake in Portsmouth Harbour and the Inshore lifeboat returned to
station was recovered and made ready for service by 00:30 |

We were launched at the request of Solent MRRC to investigate a sunken
“Illusion” in Bembridge Harbour that was reported by the local Coastguards
to be showing just the top of the mast and sail, they were concerned that the
occupant could be trapped in the vessel or in the water.
Moments after launching the cancel launch page came through on the
pagers, and on calling Solent for details the ILB was stood down and returned to
station.
The Local yacht club had rescued the
person from the vessel prior to its sinking and was waiting for the tide to
recede in order to recover it. |

We
were launched at the request of Solent MRRC to investigate and initially assist
in the recovery of a body. On arriving on scene, it was found the body had
washed ashore and was being attended by the Local Coastguards and the Police, it
was unsure initially whether it was a maritime incident or not, so the ILB
searched in around Priory bay along as far as Seaview and back recovering a
walking stick near the entrance to Bembridge Harbour.
After
some discussions the ILB was released and returned to station, was recovered and
made ready for service again by 11:00 |

We were launched again at the request of Solent MRRC to
assist the angling vessel "WotnoFish" that this time was reporting he
was unable to start his engine in the vicinity of Bembridge Ledge. After launching the ILB quickly located the casualty and towed
it back to the Lifeboat mooring, where a battery booster pack was picked up
from the station and used to assist in the starting, however this did not work
and after the engine hood was removed and the engine checked over, it was found
there was a facility to rope start it. The
spare pull cord was used from the ILB toolkit and on the forth pull it
"yippee" sprang into life, all well, the ILB then escorted the
casualty some three miles NNW of the station to the vicinity of the Nomans
land fort and with the crew happy to continue on their own into Portsmouth
Harbour the escort was discontinued and the ILB returned to station was
rehoused and made ready for service again by 01:15 |

We were launched at the request of Solent MRRC to
investigate and assist the angling vessel "WotnoFish" that was
reported aground on Bembridge Ledge. After launching the ILB quickly located the vessel high and
dry on the ledge, after a through check for damage and discussions with the two
crew who were suitable dressed in survival suits but very reluctant to leave
the vessel, it was found their only communications were two mobile phones that
were low on battery power. There were some concern's about this and they were told to
switch one off to conserve power until the vessel refloated, their anchor was
deployed out into deeper water and after informing the coastguards of this the
ILB returned to station was rehoused and made ready for service again by 18:35

The ILB was launched
at the request of Solent MRSC to assist a vessel adrift with no one onboard.
It transpired that
the crew of the Catamaran had come ashore to stretch their legs and pulled the
vessel up the beach someway and left it facing into the wind, with the sails
still up, but on a rising tide. Some time later it floated free and though blown
only some
20 metres offshore was happily drifting along, where on
nearly reaching the lifeboat station pier it turned hard to starboard and
proceeded to sail out into the Solent. Unable to reach it
they ran along the beach to the lifeboat station where one of the crew borrowed
a small dinghy and tried to row and out and capture it, but he only managed a
few hundred metres before becoming fatigued whilst the vessel was getting ever
further away. On launching the ILB
took the one crewmember that was still ashore and on-route picked up the other
crewmember from the dinghy and secured it to a fishing boat, then both were
reunited with their vessel very much embarrassed by the whole event. The casualty
continued back to Hayling Island, the ILB returned picked the dinghy and
dropped it ashore, was recovered, rehoused and made ready for service again by

We were launched at
the request of Solent MRSC to assist the French Yacht “Children’s Corner” that
had broadcast a Mayday, in French being unable to speak any English, the only
position the coastguards had, was gained was from a D/F bearing of somewhere
between Bembridge and the Warner buoy. A few minutes after
launching was we could see a yacht aground by the No 6 Buoy in the entrance to
Bembridge Harbour and on obtaining a D/F bearing fix confirmed this, being
nearly low tide, we were unable to get the ALB in so the ILB was launched at
13:45. It rendezvoused with the ALB and 1 crewman was transferred to add extra
weight as by this time the yacht was starting to heal over, the ILB quickly
transferred two crew to the yacht and established the tow, the Mainsail and Jib
were raised to assist in heeling the yacht more and slowly she came free, but
unfortunately there was insufficient water in the channel for her to float in
so its anchor was laid and it would be a long wait till around 19:00 for her to
re float again. Both the ALB and
ILB returned to station, with the ILB diverting to a small 4 metre RIB with
1POB that had lost engine power off silversands beach and was drifting. The ILB
quickly established a tow and the RIB was towed safely into the beach and
recovered on completion the ILB returned to station at 15:25

The
ILB was launched at the request of Solent MRSC to assist the 8-meter yacht
"Huff" which had a fouled propeller. The ILB arrived to position 50° 43.29'N 001° 05.74’W and found the
casualty with fishing net tangled around his propeller, rudder and bilge keels,
which the owner had tried to free for the past hour. The ILB crew cut away and
freed the casualty but not the propeller. A tow was made and the casualty was
towed to shallow water where the ILB crew managed to stand and cut away the
rest of the net. After checking he had forward and astern drive and motion he
was set at anchor for the night ready to complete his passage in the morning.
On completion the ILB
returned was rehoused and made ready for service again by 21:00

We were launched at
the request of Solent MRSC to assist the Yacht “Limosa” that had fouled a pot
line and was effectively anchored to the seabed. Once on-scene the
ILB quickly established a tow from the casualty’s stern and towed the vessel
into to tide and released the line. Checks were carried out below decks for any
signs of water ingress, there were none so the casualty was free to continue its
journey. The ILB returned to station and was rehoused at 14:30

The
second call of the day was at 19:41 this time it was to the small angling boat
“Beauchamp” which had broken down just to the south of the St Helens Fort with
one adult and two children on board. Arriving on scene at 19:52 a tow was quickly
established and the boat was towed into its own mooring in Bembridge Harbour,
this completed the Inshore Lifeboat returned once again to its boathouse
finishing this service call at 20:13

To the RIB “Dudley I” with 8 persons on board which
put out a Mayday call as the boats
flotation sponsons had become detached from the hull and the occupants were
concerned that the boat could sink at any moment. The ILB was
launched immediately and made best possible speed to the Culver Cliff area of
Bembridge the reported position of the Rib and at the same time the Coastguard
Rescue helicopter was scrambled. There was also in the area, a non
operational RNLI Tyne Class Lifeboat that was on sea trials which had as a
crew, The Bembridge Lifeboats' mechanic. Having
heard the Mayday Call the Tyne Lifeboat also responded and stood by the Rib
awaiting the arrival of the Inshore Lifeboat. Having made a quick passage in the
moderately rough sea the Inshore Lifeboat was alongside the rib at 11:44, after
assessing the situation of the crew of the RIB it was decided to transfer to
the bigger Tyne Class Lifeboat three of the Rib's crew, one of which was a
pregnant lady who was not feeling to well. A further medical assessment
concluded it would be prudent to transfer this lady to shore where more expert
medical opinion could be sought and in order to provide a smoother ride the
Tyne Lifeboat accompanied by the Inshore Lifeboat proceeded at full speed to
the Bembridge Harbour entrance. Having removed three of the Rib's crew the boat was now riding higher and therefore the immediate cause of
concern of sinking was greatly reduced. The ILB was
able to land the three persons at the Fisherman’s Wharf and pass the lady into
the care of a waiting ambulance. The ILB then returned
to the Rib which by now was proceeding slowly under its own power towards
Bembridge Harbour and after having escorted the Rib to a safe mooring in the
Harbour the Inshore Lifeboat returned to its home station arriving back there
at 13:40.

To the 34ft yacht "Big
One" on a passage from Fe Camp in France to her home port of Southampton with
three persons on board that had developed an Electrical fire close inshore off of the Priory Bay area
of Seaview. The ALB is put on standby for an immediate launch should
it be required, the
Inshore lifeboat is quickly alongside the casualty some 5 minutes later to discover
the fire which is in the yachts wiring loom has been put out using the yachts
own fire extinguishers, although the fire has caused the loss of all electrical
power. Having
ensured the three occupants are no worse for wear the decision is taken to tow
the yacht into Bembridge Harbour to a safe mooring where the local fire brigade
will be waiting to carry out a more in depth inspection and ensure the fire is
fully extinguished. Having
towed the yacht to the “Fisherman’s wharf” in the Harbour the yacht is handed
over to the local fire brigade and coastguard, and with no further action
needed the Lifeboat then
returned to station and was rehoused at 22:28

complete electrical failure and realising they were in trouble had used a mobile
to telephone a friend in Suffolk! they had contacted GMT. Yarmouth Coastguard who
had passed it on to Solent Coastguard. ILB then located the RIB that had been
passed in close proximity by two ferries and towed it back to Seaview in
difficult conditions. The RIB was placed on its moorings and the crew landed
ashore where they were met by HMCG mobile who instructed them in the error of
their ways! ILB returned to station.
